Our Ministries & Groups

Ministries

Our parish Ministries serve in countless ways, especially at our weekend Masses and caring for those in need in our community. Click to expand each Ministry to learn more about them.

If you’re interested in applying to be a volunteer for any of our ministries, please fill out this form.

Altar Servers

Altar Servers assist the priest celebrant and deacon as necessary. They may carry the cross, the processional candles, hold the book for the priest celebrant when he is not at the altar, carry the incense and censer, present the bread, wine, and water to the priest during the preparation of the gifts or assist him when he receives the gifts from the people, wash the hands of the priest, et cetera.

The Altar Servers Ministry works by a schedule and there is a workshop once a year. Those who may be interested in serving, please reach out to Glenn Bonnar: grbonnar@gmail.com. Training is always provided. If there are any new procedures, that information is passed on to the servers.

Audiovisual and Communications

The Audiovisual Ministry serves Christ the King Parish by providing technical support to all of the parish’s Sunday Masses and Special Liturgical Events.

The A/V Ministry is always looking for volunteers. Responsibilities can include: operating the Sunday morning livestream, creating Powerpoint slideshows, controlling the soundboard, setting up equipment for recorded or livestreamed events at St Vincent de Paul. If you have an interest in volunteering, and for a detailed document of A/V responsibilities, please reach out to Rileigh Ellefsen, Communication Advisor & Audiovisual Coordinator at communication.ctkdartmouth@gmail.com or phone: 902-435-2500, Option #3, Extension #1.

Baptism Preparation

The Baptism Preparation Ministry assists in coordinating and facilitating the baptism of children ages 0-7. For information on how to register your child for baptism, please click here. If you are over the age of 7 and would like to be baptized, please read more information on our RCIA page.

Care & Companionship

With Christ as our model, the Care & Companionship Ministry shares a common vocation to minister and serve people who are lonely, housebound, sick, and dying, and their families, in the parish community.

There are two different types of visits: (1) Companion Care Visitors: will visit and be real company to someone who is sick, homebound, and lonely, and (2) Palliative Care Visitors: will journey with a person and their family offering emotional spiritual support, with some understanding of the challenges with which they may be coping, to ease the suffering and improve quality of life.

The ministry volunteers visit people living in two nursing homes, Bissett Court (74 Chameau Crescent, Dartmouth), and Admiral Long Term Care Centre (6 Admiral Street, Dartmouth), as well as private home visits.

If you are interested in sharing a bit of your time with Jesus and our parish family members in this special ministry, please contact Dianne Bulger: 902-452-5948; bulgerdianne@gmail.com

The Care & Companionship ministry has also recently started a prayer shawl group. They meet every second Friday morning in the Saint John Paul II room starting February 6, 2026. If you love to knit or crochet and intentionally pray for people who are going through a difficult time, this group is for you. The gift of a prayer shawl that has been Blessed lets the recipient know they are cared for by God and the parish community.

To inquire about having a companion volunteer, please contact the Parish Office at 902-435-2500, extension 0.

Collection Counters

The Collection Counters are a team of people that gather once a week to count and deposit funds collected at the church, such as Mass offerings, envelope donations, etc. They are always looking for more people to assist with these tasks. If you’re interested in becoming a collection counter, please contact the Parish Office.

Communion to the Homebound

Volunteers in this Ministry take the Holy Eucharist directly from the Holy Mass to those in our parish, who, for various reasons, are not able to attend Sunday and weekday Masses. Taking communion to the housebound includes a short Liturgy of the Word and brief prayers.

If you are interested in sharing a bit of your time with Jesus and our parish family members in this special ministry, please contact Joanne Oostveen: joanneoostveen@accesswave.ca

Emergency Shelter Program

As part of the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth outreach, Christ the King Parish supports two temporary shelter guests at St. Thomas More church. As a Catholic Church community, it allows us to try and be a part of a solution to the homeless problem in our area and to do what Jesus asks of all of us, to care for and help those in need.

We need help with our “meals on wheels” program, providing weekly meals.
Our Shelter Team currently provides one meal each week for our guests. Our goal is to increase that to two meals per week. Ideally, we would like to have enough volunteers to rotate on a schedule and provide one meal per month – many hands make light work!
Why provide meals: Dartmouth food kitchens are located in the downtown area. Getting to these kitchens is often difficult depending on the season and weather. Our shelters do not provide cooking or food storage facilities. If you’re interested in volunteering for our emergency shelter program, please reach out to Yvette at ctkoutreach320@gmail.com

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are volunteers who assist in distributing Holy Communion during Mass, particularly when there are not enough ordained clergy. Parishioners wishing to join our Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Christ the King Parish, which takes place at both sites, may reach out to Jim Woodrow, jbwoodrow50@ eastlink.ca. Each Ministry schedule follows a three-month rotation, and training is offered.

Funeral Ministry

We currently have two church sites from which the funeral can be held:

If you are planning a Funeral for a loved one, we are here for you. Please call 902-435-2500 option #6 and leave a message with your contact information. This number is checked four times daily and a return call will be made as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can email Kathy Rankin at funeralministry.ctkdartmouth@gmail.com. Hospitality

The role of the Hospitality Ministry is to provide a welcoming environment of love, acceptance, comfort, support, care, and unity for visitors, and parishioners, in order to enhance their church experience, encourage fellowship, and help build a community of believers. The Ministry serves to reflect the love of Christ by providing assistance before, after, and during Mass. We serve as greeters, pick up collection, distribute handouts, answer questions, give direction and help where needed. To become a volunteer for the Hospitality Ministry, please contact Rita Weagle, fed@ctkdartmouth.com or (902) 435-2500 option 3, extension 4.

Lectors

The Lector is not simply a public reader of the Bible. At Mass, the Lord uses the Lector as the instrument through whom he proclaims His Word to His people. Think of this as the Lector lending God a human voice. What an amazing honor and privilege it is to read the Word of God! And what a blessing it is for us to hear it [Rev 1:3].”
A Biblical Walk through the Mass, by Edward Sri

To volunteer as a lector, please contact Pat Williams, pandbwilliams@eastlink.ca

Liturgy

Our Liturgy committee meets once a month to discuss our weekly and weekend Masses, and our special yearly Masses to ensure that our Masses are well arranged and beautiful. Any thoughts or questions parishioners are welcome to reach us by email or via our parish office.

If you want to join us, please send an email to Bonnie Pilkington, worship.ctkdartmouth@gmail.com

Music Ministry

Christ the King is a parish blessed with many talented musicians and singers and those who love to worship God through music. We have multiple music groups and styles of worship music including:

4:00 pm Mass (St. Thomas More) – Cantor and Accompanist (Hymns from the Catholic Book of Worship and Glory and Praise).

8:30 am Mass (St. Thomas More) – Contemporary Praise and Worship Band (voices, piano, guitar, electric guitar, bass, and drums; Children’s Choir (voices, piano, guitar, violin, and percussion) doing hymns and contemporary worship songs once a month at this Mass time.

11:00 am French Mass (St. Thomas More) – French Choir that worships with the French community every week.

11:15 am Mass (St. Vincent de Paul) – Adult Choir with Catholic Book of Worship and Glory and Praise hymns (voices, guitar, bass, drums); Children’s Choir (voices, piano, guitar, violin, and percussion) doing hymns and contemporary worship songs once a month at this Mass time.

At this time, we are in particular need of soloists and accompanists for our 4:00 pm Mass and a regular keyboard player for our 8:30 am Contemporary Praise and Worship Band.

If you would like to share your talents and love of music through voice or instrument with one of our music ministries, or even start or develop a music ministry, please contact Nora, our Music Director: music.ctkdartmouth@gmail.com

Nigerian Clinic (BAPOM)

The Nigeria Family Helper Program & BAPOM Hospital was established July 6, 2016. Our mission is to provide accessible healthcare and social supports for families in eastern Nigeria.

Our goal is to:

  • provide support to families who are not financially able to take care of their basic human needs and sustenance.
  • support education and tuition costs of children and youth
  • provide quality and subsidized healthcare for those in need
  • provide funding to purchase important and essential equipment for the hospital

Through fundraising efforts and generosity of our many benefactors, a fully functional medical hospital to accommodate 27 patients has been built to help meet the growing need of providing quality health care to the people. Currently, we provide food, education and medical support to over 60 families with the goal of improving their living conditions. We also have 64 students on scholarships, allowing them the opportunity for a brighter future.

We are grateful to all those who helped make this dream a reality for so many in need. However, there is still much work to be done.

Donations are accepted through cheques made out to “Nigeria Helper Program” or by e-transfer to bapomhospitalandfamilycare@gmail.com.

If you are interested in supporting our mission, please contact one of our coordinators:

RoseAnn Hetherington, 902 462-0777 or Lorraine Coulomb, 902 997-1962

Nursing Home Ministry

The Nursing Home Ministry operates out of two nursing homes: Bissett Court on the second Wednesday of the month, and the Admiral on the fourth Wednesday of the month. They set up for Mass and assist in bringing the residents to the worship area. For Mass, they sing and read the assigned liturgical readings of the day. The priest presides over Mass, giving the Homily and consecrating the Holy Eucharist.  If no priest is available, they lead a Liturgy of the Word.

Contact:
Peggy Ludlow, ludlowm@hotmail.com – for the Admiral
Karen Bonnar, karen_bonnar@hotmail.com – for Bissett Court

Mass Coordinators (Sacristans)

Sacristans are responsible for the liturgical set-up of Mass including opening the Church, setting up the credence table and Altar, and confirming all other ministers are in place to ensure that the Sacred Liturgy is carried out smoothly.  We must ensure the number of hosts is adequate for the number of parishioners, and be attentive throughout the Mass to any needs that arise during the Liturgy.

When and where: We are at the church one hour before each Mass we are scheduled for, to prepare for that Mass. We also gather for workshops as needed.

To volunteer as a Sacristan, please reach out to Elaine Mason, duncanelaine@eastlink.ca

UNBOUND Ministry

UNBOUND Is a model for healing and deliverance from Spiritual Oppression using the methodology of Neal Lozano.   This ministry focuses on prayer, reflection and a guided process through which a person may heal spiritually, emotionally or even physically from any oppressive spirit that is intruding in their life. Each session will include a combination of teaching, prayer, small group discussion, and personal reflection.

Hope restored! What if you could reach out and touch God’s love and never be the same?
Everyone is fighting an invisible battle:

  • Resentments and bitter wounds that never seem to heal
  • Negative thoughts, secret sins, and unhealthy relationships
  • Destructive habits, idols, and false identities

Unbound Ministry releases the power of Jesus into wounded hearts. The Unbound Freedom in Christ Conference will empower you to break the powerful chains in your life so that you can walk in the fullness of Christ.
